Jaipur popularly known as the “Pink City” is the capital of the colourful and rich state of Rajasthan. The city was founded in 1728 and was made a part of Rajasthan in 1949. It is a highly distinctive planned city which is historically rich with a number of forts, palaces, gardens and museums that make the city an interesting tourist destination. The landmark of the city is ‘Hawa Mahal” or the palace of winds, greets the visitor as one enters the city through the many gates, all painted in pink and probably giving the city its popular name.
Jaipur makes the Golden Triangle complete as it is equidistant from Delhi and Agra. It is also the gateway to other cities of Rajasthan like Jodhpur and Jaisalmer which lie in the west, Ajmer and Pushkar in the South east, Sariska Tiger Reserve in the Northeast to name a few. The Shekhawati region with its famous havelis, and Ranthambhore National Park are also within easy reach from this city.
The city has to be visited for its rich cultural heritage as well as to enjoy the kind hospitality of its extremely friendly and helpful people, the “Rajputs” of Rajasthan.

AIR - Jaipur has an airport and can be reached by air as it is connected to the big cities like Bombay and Delhi among others.
Road - Jaipur has a good roadways that connects it to the cities in Rajasthan and also
to the various states in India.
Train - Jaipur is well connected by railways connecting it to the big cities as well as the small cities within Rajasthan.

The best time to visit Jaipur is from October to March as the climate is moderate at this time. April onwards the temperature starts changing and can become quite unbearable in the peak of Summer.

PLACES OF INTEREST
AMBER FORT AND PALACE
The Amber Fort and Palace complex overlooking the artificial lake south of Amber town is one of the most popular tourist sites in the city, famous for its mixture of Hindu and Muslim architecture, and offering elephant rides from the town up to the palace courtyard.
JAIGARH FORT
The Jaigarh Fort on the hills above the Amber Palace complex offers stunning views of the foothills of the Aravalli range, as well as attractions such as immense underground water-storage tanks, and what is reputed to be the world's largest cannon.
ALBERT HALL
Situated in the Ram Niwas garden, this graceful building was found in 1876 by Prince Albert and has a rare collection of archeological and handicraft pieces.
CITY PALACE
This Palace is located in the heart of the city of Jaipur which was built between 1729 and 1732 by Sawai Jai Singh and subsequently other structures were added to it by his succesors. It is a splendid fusion of Rajput and Mughal style of architecture.
HAWA MAHAL
Hawa Mahal is a multi-layered palace with a beehive structure built by Sawai Pratap Singh (grand son of Sawai Jai Singh and son of Sawai Madho Singh) in 1799 and was designed by Mr. Lal Chand. The beautiful use of red and pink sand stones outlined with delicate white borders and motifs are simply out of this world.
JANTAR MANTAR
Jantar Mantar of Jaipur, the 'Yantralaya' of Sawai Jai Singh II built on his designs, is the largest of five astronomical observatories founded by him in 1716. The others are at Delhi, Ujjain, Mathura and Varanasi. It is a marvel in itself with its huge masonry instruments of extraordinary precision that can still be used quite
efficiently.
NAHARGARH FORT
Embraced in the Nahargarh Hills, the Nahargarh Fort of Jaipur was erected by Sawai Raja Jai Singh in 1734. Jaipur was the capital of Raja Jai Singh II and Nahargarh was an appropriate stand guard, rightly called the Tiger Fort. It was the first of the three forts built by the rulers of Jaipur.
JAL MAHAL
Erected to be a pleasure palace for the imperial family in 1799, Jal Mahal Palace (translated as Water Palace) of Jaipur is an exceptionally romantic place with its red sandstone elaborate architecture casting beautiful reflections in the unruffled waters of the Man Sagar Lake, which is full of hyacinths.

There are many short excursions that can be taken around Jaipur which gives one an experience of village life in India, and Rajasthan in particular.
